How is Yoga sculptural? How can Yoga be classified as an artistic practice?
Each yoga position is a form, an aesthetic shape that has developed through a process. The material is the body.
Which tools are used to form the bodies shape into a yoga position? ... not art tools!! however, if the body is outer, then the inner consciousness of thoughts, awareness of feeling, will power to act are examples of inner tools that are used to create a position.
Where does the inspiration come from? Where do yoga forms originate?
Yoga has always been a connection between the physical world and soul spiritual world. It reflects these physical and spiritual worlds in sometimes unfamiliar movements that express really surprising possibilities. The wisdoms were in ancient times carried to others by a guru or seers that lived away from normal life and gathered people to them in groups, rituals and ceremonies. Modern western culture still requires inspiration but the approach does not require a guru, group think or special rituals.
What can these exercises do for me?
These classes strengthen both the mental and physical health by orientating the conscious mind to developing thoughts from inspired sources. (I work primarily with Heinz Grills' New Yoga Will, however the approach can be transferred to research of other spiritual thinkers like Steiner, Sivananda or Iyengar for example) The relevance of this approach is that a precise thought becomes clearer, logically worked out, tested and researched during the practise. It is an Artistry in shaping the body into a desired form with a felt expression radiating out of thought. It works against any suggestions or unconscious mindfulness and so strengthens the immune system and persons capacity to deal with life creatively.
I am a professional Artist with a sculptural practice that includes social interaction, dialogue and performativity so the creative potential of learning 'to shape and form life' is central to these classes.
I have been inspired by the work of Joseph Beuys and Heinz Grill.
Joseph Beuys is a famous Artist known for his innovative social sculptural practice and the term 'Life is a social sculpture' and Heinz Grill, a spiritual researcher who has developed the 'New Yoga Will' with the idea that everyone can shape life creatively.
